What Is Citation Share in AI Search?

Citation share is the slice of an answer's sources that are actually yours — not how often you're mentioned, and not the same thing as share of voice.

Key takeaways
  • Citation share is the percentage of citations in an answer (or set of answers) that point to one site, out of all citations shown for the same query — Microsoft's own term for this in Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • It's a different question from share of voice: citation share counts *linked sources*, share of voice counts *brand mentions*. A brand can be mentioned often and cited rarely, or the reverse.
  • Sources split into types — owned, competitor-owned, review site, forum, news, earned coverage, documentation, YouTube — and which types dominate changes what a fix actually looks like.
  • A citation gap is when a source is cited for a competitor on a given query but never for you, even though you'd qualify for the same kind of mention.
  • Citation share tells you whose sources got linked. It doesn't tell you whether the answer recommended anyone, or whether being cited actually drove a click.

What is citation share, exactly?

Citation share is the percentage of citations attributed to one site out of all citations shown for the same query. Microsoft defines it this way for its own Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report: "Citation Share shows how much of the citation space your site receives for a specific grounding query. It is calculated as the percentage of citations attributed to your site out of all citations shown across all sites for that same grounding query," announced 16 June 2026. That's the clearest first-party definition available, and we use it as-is rather than coining a separate name for the same idea (see the short version in the AI search glossary too).

Applied beyond Bing's own report, the same formula works for any set of AI answers you're analyzing yourself: count every citation across every answer in your sample, then divide the ones pointing to your site by the total. If an answer set for ten prompts produced 40 total citations and 6 of them point to your domain, your citation share for that set is 15%.

How is citation share different from share of voice?

Share of voice counts mentions of your brand name in the answer text, as a slice of every brand mentioned. Citation share counts linked sources, as a slice of every source cited. They're counting two different objects — a name in prose versus a link in a reference list — and they often move independently.

CountsAnswers the question
Share of voiceBrand name mentions"How much of the conversation is about us, versus competitors?"
Citation shareLinked source citations"How much of the evidence behind this answer is actually ours?"

A brand can be named prominently while every citation behind that mention points to a third-party review site, not the brand's own pages — named and discussed, but not the source of record. How to calculate share of voice covers that metric in full; this post is the citation-side counterpart.

Which source types actually matter?

Not all citations are equal, and the type tells you what to fix. The useful split, grouping the kinds of domains that actually show up:

  • Owned — your own site: product pages, blog, docs.
  • Competitor-owned — a named rival's own site.
  • Review site — a third-party comparison or review platform, not owned by any brand in the set.
  • Forum — Reddit, Quora or similar community discussion.
  • YouTube — a video result cited as a source.
  • News — a media or press outlet.
  • Earned — independent coverage that isn't a review site, forum or news outlet specifically (a blog, a research write-up, a third-party vendor's content).
  • Documentation — technical or reference docs, including a brand's own developer docs.

This is the same split ContextOwl's own report uses for its Citations and Sources chapter, which breaks Reddit and YouTube out as their own explicit types because AI engines cite both disproportionately relative to how often either shows up in a typical SEO citation profile.

Why the type matters: if your citation share is low because competitors dominate review-site citations, the fix is outreach to those review sites. If it's low because competitors dominate forum citations, the fix is a presence in those communities, which is a different project entirely. A single citation-share percentage hides which of these is actually happening.

What is a citation gap?

A citation gap is when a source cites a competitor for a given query but has never cited you — even though the source covers your category and you'd plausibly qualify for the same kind of mention. It's the most actionable reading of a low citation share, because it names the exact source to approach rather than leaving "get more citations" as a vague instruction.

Citation gap analysis covers finding and acting on these gaps in full. The short version: for each competitor cited more than you on the same prompt set, list the specific sources behind their citations, then check which ones have never linked to you at all. That list is the actual to-do, not a number.

How do you count it yourself, from one answer set?

Here's a worked count, run live for this post, not from a screenshot but from a real web search — disclosed honestly rather than presented as a formal product scan. AI web search (Claude, web search enabled), prompt: "best accounting software for freelancers," 10 October 2026. The answer named five brands (Zoho Books, FreshBooks, QuickBooks, Xero, Wave) and returned nine source citations across eight distinct domains:

Source typeDomains citedCount
Owned (any of the five named brands' own sites)—0
Review sitebusiness.org, fitsmallbusiness.com (×2 articles), thecfoclub.com, business.com, freelancepick.com6
News / consumer finance medianerdwallet.com1
Earned (independent vendor or personal blog, not one of the five named brands)cashflowy.ai, stephsbooks.com2

Evidence: Of 9 total citations, 0 pointed to any of the five named brands' own domains — a 0% owned-citation share for every brand named in this answer, with review sites carrying the largest share (6 of 9). This is one run, one prompt, one day; it shows how the count works, not a general finding about the category.

That 0% isn't unusual — it matches the pattern seen across other live checks on this blog, where brands get named and recommended with the actual linked evidence pointing somewhere else entirely. It also shows why a citation-share number needs the source-type breakdown next to it: "0% owned" reads very differently once you see six of nine citations went to review sites, not competitors.

What can citation share not tell you?

It doesn't tell you whether the answer recommended anyone, only whose sources backed the claims in it. It doesn't tell you whether a citation drove a click — Bing's own Citation Share metric counts attribution within the answer, not downstream traffic. And one answer set's citation share is one sample: like every other metric on this blog, it needs repeat runs before it's a pattern rather than a single data point. How to measure AI visibility sets out the same run-count discipline that applies here.

FAQ

Is citation share the same as "being cited" in general? Citation share is the proportion — your citations divided by every citation shown for that query or answer set. "Being cited" is just the binary yes/no for one instance.

Does a high citation share mean the brand is recommended? Not necessarily. A source can be cited for a factual claim (like a price) without the answer recommending that brand over others. Citation and recommendation are separate signals — see mentions, citations and recommendations are three different things.

Where can I see citation share for my own site today? Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report shows it for Bing-grounded answers, free, if you've verified your site there. It doesn't cover ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity's own citation behavior, since each engine's sourcing is separate.

Why do review sites and forums show up so often in citation counts? AI engines appear to lean on independent comparison content and community discussion for buyer-style "best X" questions, rather than brands' own marketing pages — a pattern consistent with what this post's worked example and others on this blog have found, though no engine has published its own source-weighting method.

What to do next

  1. Pull one recent AI answer about your category and count its citations by source type, using the split above.
  2. Calculate your citation share for that answer set: your citations divided by total citations shown.
  3. For every competitor with a higher citation share, list the specific sources behind their citations and check which ones have never cited you.
